Description: At Champlain Orchards, we aim to produce the best-tasting apples possible, and to take good care of the earth while we're at it. Located on a beautiful hilltop in the Champlain Valley, we grow 15 delicious varieties of apples and press our own fresh, sweet cider. This land produces a fine apple. Our proximity to Lake Champlain buffers the weather, our hills provide excellent drainage, and the mix of stony loam and clay soils that you find here in Addison County are ideal for our trees' root systems.
My neighbors and I have worked with The Vermont Land Trust to permanently conserve these orchards and the surrounding farmland. I may be the youngest orchardist in Vermont. I purchased and began farming this land when I was 27 and have worked with other Shoreham growers to learn the subtleties of this trade. Gradually, you come to know how to get honey bees to pollinate just the right number of blossoms, how to protect the fruit when you sense a storm coming in the middle of the night, how to prune so that sunlight penetrates to the fruiting wood, how to keep hungry mice away from the tender trucks of the sapling trees through the winter.
As a 100 year-old family-owned and operated farm, Champlain Orchards strives to preserve the best traditions of Vermont apple farming, while tapping the best of new farming advances. In this spirit, we grow both old time New England varieties such as the Northern Spy, and new delicious flavors such as the Honeycrisp. Similarly, we care for the land and the trees in many ways that date back to the first American settlers, but also practice integrated pest management, have a transitional organic orchard, and take a thoughtful, forward-thinking approach to growing safe apples and being excellent stewards of this land.
We deliver our apples to Vermont grocery stores, natural food markets, restaurants and farm stands, and ship apples with a new mail-order service. Best of all - every one of our apple varieties is available (straight off the tree!) in our pick your own orchard. Cider (fresh off the press!) is available at our mill. During the harvest, Champlain Orchards hosts free evening concerts. Spread out with a picnic on our hill overlooking Lake Champlain to enjoy bluegrass music, bagpipes and folk music with your kids, pets and friends. Each year on the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend, Champlain Orchards also hosts an annual pig roast. We hope you will join us for a day of late season apple and pumpkin picking and for a home cooked farm feast of roast pork, sausage, potato salad, baked beans, fresh cider, and apple crisp with cream.
Apples: Old and new varieties - Ginger Gold, Cortland, McIntgosh, Paulared, Honeycrisp, Red Haralson, Macoun, Gala, Jonagold, Golden Supreme, Liberty, Empire, Matsu (Crispin), Northern Spy, Red Delicious, Red Max.
Other Fruit: European and Asian plums, summer and fall-bearing raspberries (red, yellow and black), peaches, pumpkins
